Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

As an educator, social worker, and therapist, I have worked with a lot of well-meaning folks who had a great desire to help children, families, and communities. As altruistic as they were, they often felt goodwill alone was enough to support others without thinking about how their upbringing, class, societal values, or even traumas impacted their work.

These folks rarely took time to investigate how saviorism, martyrdom, and paternalism played a role in their practice. Unfortunately, I’ve had to bear the negative consequences of this lack of self-reflection.

I’ve had therapists pity me rather than empower me. I’ve had people at work be supportive of me only as long as I agree with them and let them lead the way.

Many people have stated that they are “color-blind” or “treat everyone the same” rather than recognizing the varying needs of the people they work with.

When this happens, we diminish our ability to fully contribute to the communities we aim to serve.

Radical Joy Inc provides deep and applicable Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion support for groups, organizations, schools, school districts, and universities. We do this through workshops, coaching, curriculum building, and consulting.

These services cover:

  • Learning the intersection between DEI, Social Justice, and Mental Health

  • Recognizing unconscious biases and correcting them to reduce harm in the work that we do

  • Examining and assessing policies, structures, and work culture to make them more aligned with DEI standards

  • Creating DEI curriculum

  • Coaching to improve DEI culture in the classroom

We have over 10 years of experience in mental health and education and have served over 300 participants and 10 organizations, with 90% of organizations being returning customers. We have facilitated workshops, led retreats, and done school consulting in 5 countries; the United States, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

We've earned praise for being engaging, compassionate, witty, and knowledgeable. Participants also appreciate the use of real-life scenarios and actionable steps.

Reviews for Social Justice Workshops

"To me it was learning how to recognize microaggressions in my own behavior towards people of color and making myself acknowledge those thoughts and ideas I had."

"The white supremacist culture of perfectionism leads to inaction. People are so afraid of saying the wrong thing that they are silent. I know this to be true but you articulated it in such as way that I felt moved to check myself and look at the times when I have been caught up in that fear."

"I felt more empowered to speak up having just processed all of this in the workshop. The board of the school had never heard of microagressions. Helping them, and many parents, understand the significance of these "small comments" was essential."
